trojan attack
- Friday, October 8, 2010 -

can't sleep, and feel obligated to stay up with dad while he tries to fix my laptop

HSC still seems so unreal, and it just feels like a dream

still have no idea what on earth happened, but 1 second everything was fine, and the next second all these alerts were popping up everywhere stating there was a trojan horse trying to invade the system. but really, antivirus softwares fail completely because when the window came up for removing the virus the operation failed and laptop inexplicably shutdown and now whenever it starts up i can log in but then it's just a black screen.

Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work, but amazingly Vaio Recovery works (because there's this ingenious Assist button on the keyboard which i have never fully appreciated until now) but the only option seems to be to restore the laptop back to its original factory conditions. which basically means losing all my files. so dad is trying to fix it.

there was a moment of despair, but really there is so much more to be thankful for, because it could've been a lot more disastrous
1. just about all of my HSC notes/essays are preserved, rather ironically because i've been sending them around to people and i've either been able to recover them from email or from my USB. (i find it amusing that just a few hours ago i was so annoyed at my english teacher for not replying to my emails and was thinking that i emailed him all for nothing... but because i emailed him i didn't lose my newest practice essays)
2. i have this desktop to use, which is more than what i could ask for
3. it's come to the stage of studying when i don't really need a computer anymore, apart from editing a hamlet essay. after that it's just doing past papers.

and i'm amused that i'm thinking of everything in terms of HSC, despite proclaiming that it really doesn't matter that much.
the only thing that's really saddening me now is the thought of about 20GB of photos that will be lost if i'm forced to restore the laptop. (which suddenly makes me think of TnP and idolatry ><") i guess it's a timely reminder that all my trust should be placed in God (amusing that that was the major theme of my talk just 2 weeks ago) and to not get complacent in what i can do, or the fact that, hey, i feel relatively prepared for HSC and confident that i'll be able to get everything together before next friday, but lol, who am i to predict what will happen tomorrow? and although it's taken me two hours to get to this state of mind, i know now that i am calmly convinced of the fact that everything will work out, one way or the other, because God is good and amazing. and perhaps a month, a year, 10 years, from now, i'll look back and be able to clearly see His hand guiding me through this. and i'm just so so so thankful that at this time i have the enormous privilege of being able to turn to God, knowing that He's there, He listens and He cares :)

*edit: another thing i'm thankful for - i've just been reminded of how loved i am, even if it's a subtle and inherent love not prone to public displays of affection. but it's always there when i need it. i feel guilty, but nothing i say will dissuade him. he needs to go to work early tomorrow morning and he had a conference call which only ended at 9pm, but he's still trying to fix my laptop while convincing me to go to sleep because there's nothing i can do. i feel tempted to tell him to just restore the system despite the fact that when he first mentioned it i so adamantly refused. how much are 20GB of photos worth? maybe i should go sleep now, i'm rambling senselessly
